Tokutei Ginou Taxi exam practice
Japanese taxi vocabulary with furigana for the Tokutei Ginou exam
According to the official guidelines the taxi exam is given in Japanese (with ruby where needed), and much of the difficulty is in the kanji. The Tokutei Taxi vocabulary notebook contains 500 words with furigana readings, English and Vietnamese meanings, chosen from the questions in the app's 20 tests.
- 500words in the notebook
- 100free words
- 14topic groups
- 3languages: Japanese, English, Vietnamese
How the notebook is built
Instead of a generic word list, the notebook was generated from the 1,000 questions in the 20 practice tests and ranked by how often each word appears. Words that appear most often rank highest, so when you study from the top of the list you meet them again in the questions. Each entry has the kanji form, the hiragana reading, an English meaning, a Vietnamese meaning and an example sentence taken from the tests, with furigana on the kanji.
The words are grouped by topic: Practical scenarios, Stopping & parking, Traffic rules, Alcohol & roll call, Customer service, Safety & inspection, Driver duties, Refusing passengers, Operation management, Fares, Emergencies & accidents, Accessibility, Lost items, Assistance dogs.
Sample table: 16 real words from the notebook
These 16 words are taken straight from the app's vocabulary notebook so you can judge how practical the list is:
| Japanese | Reading | English | Vietnamese |
|---|---|---|---|
| 旅客 | りょかく | passenger | hành khách |
| 乗務 | じょうむ | on-duty driving, crew duty | làm nhiệm vụ lái xe (ca làm) |
| 拒否 | きょひ | refusal | từ chối |
| 停車 | ていしゃ | stopping (a vehicle) | dừng xe (tạm thời) |
| 駐車 | ちゅうしゃ | parking | đỗ xe |
| 点呼 | てんこ | roll call, pre/post-duty check | điểm danh, kiểm tra trước/sau ca (tenko) |
| 補助犬 | ほじょけん | assistance dog | chó hỗ trợ (người khuyết tật) |
| 運賃 | うんちん | fare | tiền cước (vé xe) |
| 空車 | くうしゃ | vacant taxi | xe trống (chưa có khách) |
| 回送 | かいそう | out of service | chạy xe không đón khách |
| 踏切 | ふみきり | railroad crossing | chỗ chắn tàu (giao cắt đường sắt) |
| 忘れ物 | わすれもの | lost item, left-behind item | đồ để quên |
| 運行管理者 | うんこうかんりしゃ | operation manager | người quản lý vận hành |
| 酒気帯び | しゅきおび | under the influence of alcohol | có hơi rượu (trong người) |
| 消火栓 | しょうかせん | fire hydrant | trụ cứu hỏa |
| 横断歩道 | おうだんほどう | pedestrian crossing | vạch qua đường cho người đi bộ |
Watch out for look-alike pairs such as 停車 (ていしゃ), a short stop, and 駐車 (ちゅうしゃ), parking. They appear constantly in questions about where stopping and parking are prohibited. Another pair is 空車 (くうしゃ), a vacant taxi, and 回送 (かいそう), driving without taking passengers.

Learning words through example sentences
Knowing a word's meaning is not enough; you need to recognise it inside a real question. Here are three sentences from the practice tests, with furigana and translations:
点呼は、運行管理者等が実施する。
Roll call will be conducted by the operations manager or other relevant personnel.
Điểm danh do quản lý vận hành, v.v. thực hiện.
聴導犬も、補助犬として同伴を原則拒否できない。
Hearing assistance dogs, as service dogs, cannot be refused entry in principle.
Chó trợ thính cũng không được từ chối theo nguyên tắc.
実車なのに空車と表示してはならない。
It is not permissible to display "vacant" when a vehicle is actually in service.
Đang có khách thì không được để đèn trống.
Furigana only helps you read; it does not change what a sentence means. The legal meaning lives in the word, so learn each word together with its kanji, not just its reading.
Free and VIP
The first 100 words (by rank) are free for everyone. The remaining words are part of VIP, which is bought inside the iOS app with Apple payment, with the price shown by Apple: download Tokutei Taxi on the App Store. Furigana is also shown in full in the three free practice tests.
How to study 500 words effectively
- Learn 10 to 15 words a day, starting with the highest-ranked ones.
- Say both the word and its reading aloud; the exam is in Japanese and you need to recognise the kanji.
- After each group of words, take a practice test and notice where those words appear. See free CBT mock tests.
- Collect the words that keep tripping you up into a separate list and review it every few days.
If you are new to the exam, start with what the Tokutei Taxi exam is, and read the study tips for the keywords that cause the most traps.
