How to register for the Tokutei Ginou Taxi exam on ClassNK: step by step

Registration for the taxi exam is done on the ClassNK system, which is mostly in Japanese and English. This page walks through 13 steps in order and points out the easy mistakes. A version with a screenshot for every step is available free in the exam guide section of the app.

Before you start

A working email address: ClassNK sends a confirmation link to it.
Identification documents: the system asks you to upload two files in the Certificate 1 and Certificate 2 boxes (証明書1 and 証明書2). Check on the portal which documents are accepted.
Eligibility: according to the official guidelines you must be at least 17 years old on the exam day; taking the exam in Japan also requires a valid residence status.

The official login page is sswt.classnk.or.jp/login and the information portal is sswt-portal.classnk.or.jp. The screens can change over time; if they differ from the description below, follow the official portal.

Part 1: create your candidate account (steps 1 to 8)

Open the ClassNK registration system and tap 受験者登録 (candidate registration). Do not tap 企業登録, which is company registration.
Enter your email and tap 受験者登録 again.
Read the terms and agree with the button 上記事項を十分理解した上で同意します.
Open the email from ClassNK and tap the My Page registration URL (マイページ登録). The URL is valid for 24 hours. This is a deadline for opening the link, not an approval time.
Fill in your My Page details: name, nationality, gender, date of birth, phone number, address and password. Country and address must be where you currently live (Japan if you live in Japan, not your hometown). Complete every field marked * and tap Register / 登録.
Confirm the registration: check what you typed and tap Confirm / 確認.
Log in again with your registered email and new password, complete the reCAPTCHA (I'm not a robot) and tap ログイン.
Open My Page and save your candidate code (受験者コード). Write it down somewhere safe; you will need it later.

Part 2: register for the exam (steps 9 to 13)

Open Test List (試験一覧) in the left-hand menu.
Select CBT (CBT方式試験) and tap Register for the CBT. Do not use the CBT予約登録・変更 (booking) button at this stage.
Choose the right exam under Exam Category (試験区分): タクシー1号試験 (Taxi No. 1). Do not choose トラック1号試験 (truck) or バス1号試験 (bus).
Upload your documents in Certificate 1 and Certificate 2. Each file can be up to 25 MB. Use clear scans or photos showing all details.
Tap Registration / 保存 to submit. The status 申請中 (application pending) means ClassNK is reviewing your application.

After submitting, do not book a date yet. Only once your application is approved, return to Test List (試験一覧) and use CBT予約登録・変更 to choose a date and venue.

Common mistakes

Tapping 企業登録 (company registration) instead of 受験者登録.
Selecting the truck or bus exam instead of タクシー1号試験.
Waiting more than 24 hours to open the link in the email, which then expires.
Entering your hometown address instead of where you currently live.
Forgetting to save your candidate code (受験者コード).
Trying to book while the application is still 申請中.

Dates, fees and venues

Exam dates change from session to session, and fees and venues appear only on the registration portal, so this page deliberately gives no figures. Check the ClassNK portal before arranging travel. Take dates, fees and venues only from official sources, never from rumours.

On exam day and afterwards

Arrive earlier than the stated time (the app suggests at least 30 minutes), bring valid photo identification and your confirmation, do not bring study materials or phones into restricted areas, and follow the invigilator's instructions. According to the official guidelines, results are announced on a dedicated website within one month after the exam.
