Tokutei Taxi study tips: common exam traps and how to prepare
Many wrong answers are not about missing the rule; they come from misreading one small word. This page collects the trap patterns and time-management ideas from the app's tips section. No tip can guarantee that you will pass, but knowing these traps helps you avoid losing points for no reason.

First, remember the 60% - 60% rule
The exam marks each part separately: at least 18/30 in theory and 12/20 in practical. Do not gamble one part to save the other. If a practical question is hard, eliminate the dangerous options and choose; do not leave many blank. The full structure is on what the Tokutei Taxi exam is.
Traps in true/false (○×) questions
1. Two-part sentences
A ○× question is judged as a whole sentence. If one half is right but the other half gets one legal detail wrong, the whole sentence is ×. Compare every condition in the sentence.
2. Absolute words
Words such as 必ず (always), 絶対 (absolutely), 常に (at all times) and いかなる場合も (in any case) often turn a duty that has exceptions into a false statement, because taxi rules have many exceptions. But do not apply this mechanically: actions that are strictly forbidden, such as driving after drinking, can still be true statements with an absolute word. Conversely, phrases such as 原則として (in principle) or 場合がある (there are cases) are often true.
3. Swapped numbers
Changing a number is one of the most common traps. Distance marks such as 5 m and 10 m apply to different places, so questions often swap them or use odd numbers such as 3 m, 4 m or 8 m. Learn these marks as one table and compare them as a group.
4. The wrong subject
Many questions are missed because the duty of the driver (運転者) is confused with the duty of the operator (事業者) or the operations manager (運行管理者). Before choosing, underline the subject: who is supposed to do this?
5. 停車 and 駐車
停車 (ていしゃ) is a short stop to pick up or drop off, while 駐車 (ちゅうしゃ) is parking or waiting for customers. Some places prohibit parking without necessarily prohibiting a short stop for passengers. This is one of the easiest pairs to mix up.
6. Reasons that sound sensible
Reasons such as the customer asked, turning on hazard lights, only stopping briefly, or being used to the road do not automatically lift a prohibition. For assistance dogs (補助犬), being afraid of dirt, disliking dogs or other customers objecting are not valid reasons to refuse.

Traps in the practical A/B/C part
- Eliminate dangerous options first: speeding up, honking to hurry someone or cutting across are aggressive choices and are usually wrong.
- The quick answer is not the right answer. The question asks for the most appropriate action, not the one that saves time.
- Read the diagram labels: work out which vehicle is yours (your vehicle, oncoming vehicle, pedestrian). An arrow in the diagram shows an expected direction, not the answer.
- Cut the noise: details such as a regular customer, a customer in a hurry or rain are rarely exceptions. Answer the question asked at the end.
- If two options both involve yielding, choose the one that yields to the right party.
When you do not understand all the Japanese
You do not need every grammar point. Anchor on a few key kanji words such as 点呼, 拒否, 補助犬, 停車, メーター and 踏切, then use the English or Vietnamese translation to pin down whether something must, must not or may be done. Furigana is only for reading and never changes what the rule says. A list of common words is on Japanese taxi vocabulary.
Tactics for the 80 minutes
- Do the 30 theory questions first to bank safe points, since true/false questions are usually quicker than practical ones.
- Flag hard questions and move on. In a CBT you can skip around, so answer the easy ones first.
- Do not spend more than about 2.5 minutes on one practical question. Eliminate, choose and move on.
- Last ten minutes: finish any unanswered questions, then review the flagged ones.
- Do not change an answer on a vague feeling. Change it only when you find a keyword that contradicts your choice.
A plan for the final days
Sit test 1 to find your rhythm, then harder tests to get used to time pressure. Treat the app's internal score targets as practice goals, not as the official mark, which is 60% in each part. In the days before the exam, avoid alcohol and sleep well; bring your identification and confirmation and arrive early. To try the free tests, see free CBT mock tests.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common trap in the true/false questions?
Two-part sentences where one half is wrong, absolute words such as 必ず or 絶対, and swapped numbers such as the 5 m and 10 m marks. The app's tips rank swapped numbers among the most common traps.
Should I always choose × when I see an absolute word?
No, not mechanically. Strictly forbidden actions such as driving after drinking can still be true statements. Read the whole sentence.
How should I split the 80 minutes?
About 1 minute per true/false question, about 2 minutes per practical question, and roughly 10 minutes at the end to review flagged questions.
Will following these tips make me pass?
No. Nothing can guarantee a result. The tips only help you avoid losing points through misreading; passing depends on your understanding and practice.
