Tokutei Ginou Taxi exam day: how to prepare and what to expect

Knowing in advance how the day will go makes you calmer and keeps you from losing points to avoidable mistakes. This page covers the documents to bring, exam room rules, the procedure at the venue and how to split the 80 minutes, based on the official guidelines and the free exam guide in the app.

Before exam day: what to prepare

Exam dates change from session to session and are announced by ClassNK and MLIT. Do not book while your application is still pending; review the steps in our registration guide.

Exam dates, fees and venues come only from the official ClassNK portal. This page deliberately gives no figures.

Exam room rules

Bring valid identification and your confirmation. Do not take study materials, phones or recording devices into restricted areas, and follow the invigilator's instructions. Cheating can lead to your result being cancelled: the official guidelines state that a person who cheats may be barred from sitting the exam for a set period. If you are not sure whether an item is allowed, leave it outside before entering the room.

Procedure at the venue

  1. Arrive early: the app advises at least 30 minutes before the stated time, so you can finish check-in and find your room.
  2. Complete check-in and identity verification with the staff.
  3. Listen to the CBT instructions: how to select answers, flag questions, move between them and submit.
  4. Answer 50 questions in 80 minutes.
  5. Submit as the system instructs.

According to the official guidelines the exam may be given as a CBT or on paper depending on the session, so read the notice for the session you registered for.

How to split the 80 minutes

80 minutes for 50 questions is about 96 seconds per question. This is the split suggested by the tips in the app:

StageWhat to doReference time
Theory30 true/false questions, bank the safe points firstabout 30 minutes (about 1 minute each)
Practical20 A/B/C questions, eliminate dangerous options firstabout 40 minutes (about 2 minutes each)
ReviewFinish unanswered questions, then revisit flagged onesabout the last 10 minutes

A few rules help you keep the pace: do not let one practical question eat more than about 2.5 minutes, eliminate, choose and move on; flag hard questions to return to; and do not change an answer on a vague feeling, only when you find a keyword that contradicts your choice. More in our study tips.

The night before and the morning of the exam

Avoid alcohol the day before, sleep well, and check your documents and route again. This is an exam about professional taxi driving, so a clear head is the first requirement. Do not try to learn new material at the last minute; review your table of distance marks and the questions you often get wrong.

After the exam

According to the official guidelines, results are announced on a dedicated website within one month after the exam, so keep your registration account. You pass when you reach 60% in theory and 60% in practical; the details are on how scoring and passing work. If you do not pass, you may retake in a later session under ClassNK's rules; check the current rules on the portal. If you pass, see the next steps on exam requirements and what you need after passing.
