What does the theory part test?
According to the official guidelines the taxi exam covers three areas: operations (運行業務), customer service (接遇業務) and safety and hygiene (安全衛生). The theory part tests duties and rules in these areas: roll call and alcohol checks, refusing passengers, fares, vehicle safety, traffic rules, stopping and parking, emergencies, helping passengers with disabilities, lost items and assistance dogs. The overall structure is on what the Tokutei Taxi exam is.
13 topic groups across the app's 600 theory questions
The table counts the theory questions in each topic group across the 20 Tokutei Taxi tests (figures taken directly from the app's exam data):

Three real theory questions with furigana
These three questions come from the app's practice tests, with furigana, translations and answers:
急いでいる旅客がいても、赤信号で進行してはならない。
Even if there are passengers in a hurry, you must not proceed at a red light.
Answer: ○
タクシー運転者は、乗務後にも運行管理者等による点呼を受けなければならない。
Taxi drivers must undergo a roll call by a dispatch manager or other designated person after completing their shift.
Answer: ○
降車時に自店の宣伝を強要してよい。
It is permissible to force passengers to accept advertising for your own business when they get out of the vehicle.
Answer: ×
The first shows a very familiar pattern: however much of a hurry a passenger is in, it never justifies breaking a traffic signal. The second reminds you that roll call also happens after duty, not only before. The third is a false statement, because pressing a customer to accept advertising as they get out does not fit the courteous service expected of a driver.
How to read a true/false question without losing points
- Find the subject: who is supposed to do this, the driver, the operator or the operations manager?
- Read to the end of the sentence: Japanese settles the meaning at the end, so tell しなければならない (must), してはならない (must not) and できる (may) apart.
- Check each half: if a sentence has two parts and one is wrong, the whole sentence is ×.
- Be careful with absolute words such as 必ず, 絶対 and 常に, and notice phrases such as 原則として, which often go with true statements.
- Compare numbers: questions often change a number or swap the place it applies to.
The trap patterns are explained in detail on our study tips page.
Practising the theory section with the app
The best way is to sit tests with the real structure and then review mistakes. The first three tests are free, with furigana and translations: free CBT mock tests. When a word is new, look it up in Japanese taxi vocabulary. The practical part needs a different approach; see the practical section.
